“Waterproof” and “tablet” are two words you don’t often hear together. That’ll change on May 4, when the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet release date rolls around. Sony announced the release date while detailing the Xperia Z2 specs and pricing information. The info was specific to Sony Stores, but Verizon customers are likely to encounter similar pricing when the system launches for that wireless carrier as well.
All indications are that the Xperia Z2 price will be $499.99 across all providers. That’s the price currently showing on Sony’s own Sony Store page. Pricing for Verizon specifically hasn’t been announced, but it’ll likely be the same.
Sony’s Xperia Z2 is the world’s first 10.1″ tablet display with Full HD TRILUMINOS and Live Color LED technology and X-Reality for a mobile device. The Xperia Z2 Tablet also incorporates Sony’s latest BRAVIA TV technology, giving the tablet bright colors and sharp images to go with its Front Surround audio technology.

Now, about that whole “waterproof tablet” thing. In the U.S., the Xperia Z2 Tablet is a waterproof tablet per the definitions of IP55/58. Specifications verified by Strategy Analytics’ SpecTRAX service on April 17 showed that, in compliance with IP55 and IP58, the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet is protected against the ingress of dust and is waterproof. Provided that all ports and covers are firmly closed, the phone is protected against low pressure jets of water from all practicable directions in compliance with IP 55 and/or can be kept under 1.50 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes in compliance with IP58.

For those who want to make the most of the Xperia Z2 tablet, Sony plans to offer a variety of optional accessories. These will include the BKB10 Bluetooth keyboard with NFC, the BSC10 Bluetooth speaker with magnetic charging dock, the MDR-NC31EM noise cancelling headset, and the SCR12 protective case and desk stand. Some accessories will be available on the Xperia Z2 Tablet release date of May 4, while others will be available at unspecified later dates.
The Xperia Z2 Tablet also comes with access to an exclusive entertainment offer that includes six blockbuster movies from Sony Pictures, including Captain Phillips and American Hustle, through the Video Unlimited service. Sony’s also offering a 30-day free trial of the Music Unlimited service and eight PlayStation Mobile games.
