After taking a short break from the series, Activision is bringing back the Tony Hawk skateboarding series, the company has announced, and it’s making its resurgence with an all-new hardware peripheral that will try to bring the skating vibe to the PS3 and Xbox 360 even though they don’t have a Wii Balance Board.
Called Tony Hawk: RIDE, the new game will include a motion-sensing skateboard controller that will let gamers physically play the game. A Wii version is also in the works and will use a similar peripheral, but Activision did not announce whether the Wii version will support the Balance Board. It’s unlikely to do so, though.
Tony Hawk: RIDE will come with a wireless skateboard controller that uses a combination of accelerometers and motion sensors to let players control the on-screen action by performing various movements and gestures on the board.
The new skateboarding peripheral is the latest in a long line of hardware add-ons for Activision, which has long provided them via the Guitar Hero series.
“This is the game I’ve always wanted to make,” skating legend Tony Hawk said in a prepared statement. “Playing on the board is unlike any other game, and I’m excited for everyone to have the chance to feel what it’s really like to experience the true feeling of skateboarding.”
Minus the helmet and bruises, of course.
