If the Pittsburgh Steelers hadn’t begun to show signs of life last week, today’s 1pm game on FOX between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Pittsburgh Steelers would’ve been just about last on most people’s watch lists. The Buccaneers have continued to play awfully, and the Steelers own the Bucs just about every time out.
With today’s Bucs Steelers game live at Heinz Field, expecting anything but another Steelers win would be sheer madness. Pittsburgh has beaten the Bucs in eight of nine games, and they’ve flat-out dominated the Buccaneers in each of their past three games: a 17-7 win in 2002, a 20-3 victory in 2006 and a 38-13 drubbing in 2010. No wonder these teams don’t meet very often. It’s hardly a game.
With that said, the Steelers seemed to be on the ropes this season until they turned it around with a 37-19 win last week over the Panthers. In that game, it wasn’t Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger who got things going, but running backs Le’Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount. Against Carolina the Steelers rushed for 264 yards against a Panthers run defense that had only allowed 170 yards total in two weeks.
If the Buccaneers have a chance as you watch today’s Steelers game live, it’s the fact that Pittsburgh’s defense is banged up. That’s a relief to the Bucs, as they’ll be playing without starting quarterback Josh McCown. The Steelers secondary could have fits against Tampa Bay’s big wide receivers, but only if backup QB Mike Glennon can play as well today as coach Lovie Smith thinks he will in the future.
