Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End released late last year on Blu-ray with as much fanfare as could be expected for the final (?) film in the Pirates series. With Chow Yun Fat appearing alongside Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush's Capt. Barbossa reuniting with Capt. Jack Sparrow, Pirates 3 was both an actor and CG powerhouse. The Blu-ray Disc suffered from some technical bonus-feature snafus, but the picture and audio quality were great, even as the film suffered from some overwriting and melodrama. Of all three … [Read more...]
The Mummy D-BOX Review
With The Mummy 3 having hit theaters this summer, it's not surprising to see Universal release The Mummy and The Mummy Returns on Blu-ray Disc to capitalize on moviegoers' fascination with all things perfumed and exhumed. As we discussed in our full-length Blu-ray reviews of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, the original film, like its theatrical counterpart, makes for a relatively impressive Blu-ray presentation, in video and audio as well as bonus features. Just a few weeks after those films made their Blu-ray debut, … [Read more...]
Blu-ray Outpacing DVD's Early Years, Says Analyst
With all the discussion about Blu-ray adoption rates, both for the high-definition format itself and for Blu-ray Disc players, comparisons often fly about Blu-ray's success versus HD-DVD's, with the moral of the story being "Blu-ray isn't out of the woods yet." But what happens when one considers consumer adoption of the Blu-ray format compared to DVD? Turns out, Blu-ray is actually ahead of the pace enjoyed by the once-new-and-now-standard DVD format. At least, that's the case in Europe. Jim Bottoms, Managing … [Read more...]

Paramount to Re-Enter Blu-ray Scene on May 20
Paramount Home Entertainment is re-entering the Blu-ray Disc market, an announcement that's not exactly unexpected in light of HD-DVD's marketplace failure. What is surprising is just how soon Paramount will get back into the Blu-ray game: May 20. On May 20, Paramount will release Face/Off, Next and Bee Movie on Blu-ray Disc, the latter of which was scheduled to ship as an HD-DVD in March. Those plans never materialized. On June 3, Paramount will roll out Cloverfield and There Will Be Blood on Blu-ray, followed a … [Read more...]
Blu-ray Dominance Will be Delayed, Say Analysts
It has been three months since HD-DVD lost its contest with Blu-ray, and the market has absorbed the consequent impacts while remaining open to changes. To clear inventory, HD-DVD and universal players are selling at deep discounts, HD-DVD and universal drives will no longer ship after 2008, and Best Buy has removed HD-DVDs from its shelves to make room for more standard Blu-ray movies and DVDs. But in spite of all this, say analysts, the Blu-ray format and market must undergo further evolution before it can truly … [Read more...]
