When folks want to pamper themselves or others in the middle of summer, they joke about “Christmas in July.” Twentieth Century Fox has turned that phrase on its ear a bit, releasing the classic Stars and Stripes Forever on a special Blu-ray Disc set just as the Christmas spirit hits full swing. Stars and Stripes Forever is a rousing patriotic march heard every July 4, and this film of the same name follows the American music legend of wrote it, John Philip Sousa. Receiving three Grammy Award nominations in 1953, Stars and Stripes Forever is a film biography in which Clifton Webb stars as composer John Philip Sousa, who while leading the Marine Corps Band in the 1890s meets the inventor of an instrument he calls the Sousaphone. The film follows Sousa after he leaves the Marines an forms his own band. Though he’d rather write ballads, Sousa’s marches bring him increasing fame, and from its debut in 1892, the band’s a great success. But Sousa’s “no wives” rule threatens a romance of his friends and band mates Willie and Lily — as does the Spanish-American War.
