Toy Defense Free is unlike most TD games in that the level of realism in gameplay, graphics, animation, strategy, and tactics is so great that it could easily be classified as a simulation game. The designers have taken great care to make their game absorbing, challenging, and adrenaline producing, without any blood and gore. Look very carefully at a minutely detailed, heavy tank, and a small windup key will be visible. This is a battle between toys, albeit extremely realistic toys, which are subject to constant improvement by means of a sophisticated skills tree.
When an enemy soldier walks down the road a subtle, animated shadow can be seen beneath him. The flame emanating from the flamethrower is blue then orange then red and behaves like real fire. If the operator turns while shooting burning kerosene, the flame spreads and arcs until he reaches a fixed position. Each weapon that fires a projectile has its own characteristic sound and flash. Infantrymen can earn different ranks and carry different rifles and machine guns, each with its own, independent rate of fire and relative lethality. The sound of full-scale battle is the sound of confusion, as different rates of fire beat against each other. The sight of full-scale battle is the sight of chaos, as soldiers escape from burning armored personnel carriers and the roads are choked with men and machines trying to move forward.

Remarkably, the behavior of every man and machine on both sides is independent of each other. At any time during battle, players can add, remove, upgrade, or repair emplacements, and they will join the fighting immediately. Every element on both sides exhibits intelligent, independent targeting. The player’s infantrymen will automatically turn to fire at a more valuable target, and artillery will ignore troops when tanks are coming into range. This makes for gameplay that is never repetitive; there are always unique, small, tactical skirmishes between uniquely capable opponents in the midst of every large-scale battle.
The player must make many tactical and strategic choices, and seeing the result of those choices play out in battle is part of the pleasure of the game. Is it better to have one highly skilled infantryman, or two normal combat soldiers at the same cost? Should forces be concentrated near the enemy HQ, or elsewhere? Should the health of some emplacements be sacrificed for additional forces? Should stars earned in battle be used to upgrade all four types of forces equally? Is it better to have a strong force spread out over the entire board, or an extremely strong force concentrated in a smaller area?
Played in landscape orientation, Toy Defense Free presents an overhead view of the gameboard, which is a grid measuring 24 x 18. There are 8 different, highly detailed boards used over 30 levels of play. While the grid squares can be seen demarcated in light grey, the overall view is of realistic terrain. Winding, single lane, dirt roads contain parallel tread marks and have small bridges to cross streams. There is a wide variety of trees, grass, dirt, fields, and foliage represented with standard map contours and shading. Also visible are barbed wire barricades, downed aircraft, fuel drums, barracks, and the enemy headquarters. Enemy forces enter from one or more sides of the board and travel on the roads to reach HQ. Each level includes 12 or more battles, and players level-up by allowing fewer than 100 of the enemy to arrive safely at their HQ.
Of the 444 grid squares, approximately half are covered by roads, trees, and bushes. Each board contains 10 – 40 tower squares, on which the player can put any of 4 different emplacements. Tower squares are generally in close proximity to roads. While an emplacement is dragged onto the board, it displays a translucent bubble indicating its range. When initially placed, infantrymen ($20) have a range of 2.5 squares in any direction, flamethrower ($100) 1.5 squares, anti-aircraft ($120) 6 squares, and artillery ($500) 3.5 squares.
Players earn points as dollars for eliminating enemy forces. Infantrymen score 1-3 dollars each, armored vehicles and tanks 5-25 dollars each, airplanes and airships 15-85 dollars each. All soldiers and weapons on both sides have a small, horizontal, “health” thermometer above them that is displayed after they have taken their first hit. To score points, players must score sufficient hits to turn the thermometer display completely white. All soldiers and weapons have different defensive and offensive capabilities, and these are readily observed by watching the effect various forces have on the same thermometer display.
