The Michael Vick experiment didn’t last long for the New York Jets. New York will once again start QB Geno Smith as they play their second straight Monday Night Football game tonight against the Miami Dolphins. The big story as we watch the Jets MNF game live tonight is the re-benching of Vick. Vick last Sunday completed just 7 of 19 passes for 76 yards before Jets head coach Rex Ryan put Geno Smith back with the starters in the third quarter.
Though the Jets hadn’t been pleased with Smith’s performance, his benching was short-lived once Vick showed he wasn’t performing any better. However, it doesn’t sound like it was entirely Ryan’s decision. Apparently the decision to make Geno Smith the starter again was made above Ryan’s pay grade, with Ryan saying Friday that Smith will be the starter every time we watch Jets games live online or on TV through the end of the season.
As we watch Monday Night Football live streaming online or on TV tonight, the QB situation for the Dolphins is very different. For that matter, so is the team’s morale. While the 2-9 Jets struggle with everything but rushing, the 6-5 Dolphins are excelling everywhere but rushing and have renewed playoff aspirations.
The Miami Dolphins have lost some tough games in recent weeks, highlighted by their blowing of an 11-point fourth-quarter lead in their 39-36 loss to Denver last week. However, the New England Patriots lost 21-26 to the Green Bay Packers yesterday in Lambeau Field, giving the Dolphins (like the Bills) a chance to tighten the race in the AFC East.
Quarterback Ryan Tannehill is a big reason for their hope. Tannehill’s 70.9 completion percentage is third in the NFL, and during the past six games he’s thrown 12 touchdowns to just three interceptions. One year ago today, the Miami Dolphins QB threw for 331 yards and two TDs in the Dolphins’ win, though four weeks later they lost to the Jets 20-7.
