Fright Night 3D Blu-ray Review
Colin Farrell has a decent resume, and his supporting cast in Fright Night aren’t exactly chumps, which makes it all the more confusing as to why I wasted 90 minutes watching one of the worst 3D Blu-ray movies ever released. Fright Night is a reimagined version of the 1985 classic, but it’s been reimagined to such a degree that the term “classic” will never be uttered again in the same sentence. Fright Night follows a boy named Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin), who discovers that not only is his neighbor Jerry (Colin … [Read more...]
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Blu-ray 3D Review
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides needed to prove something when it released this summer, and prove something it did: the film grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. What it needed to prove wasn’t the franchise’s status as a cash cow, nor Johnny Depp’s ability to make being a thieving drunk look so fun. No, what Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides needed to prove was that the abomination of At World’s End was simply a fluke, a bad movie that tarnished an otherwise awesome franchise. Pirates of the … [Read more...]
Green Lantern Blu-ray 3D Review
I’d heard the jokes about Green Lantern, that watching the movie was merely an excuse to laugh at Ryan Reynolds after his breakup with Scarlett Johansson. I had no attachment to the comics either, meaning my interest would only be piqued by a great theatrical preview and good word of mouth. Well, Green Lantern came and went, so apparently my line of thinking wasn’t alone. Now Green Lantern has appeared on Blu-ray 3D, giving those who missed it theatrically a chance to see Green Lantern in its 3D glory on the small … [Read more...]
Toy Story Trilogy Coming to Blu-ray 3D on Nov. 1
The original Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 are all slated to release on Blu-ray 3D, Disney announced today, with a release date for all three of November 1. This release marks the first time the Toy Story trilogy will have been available in the Blu-ray 3D format. If you're looking for all three films in a single Blu-ray 3D package, Disney will release a combination pack that includes the Blu-ray 3D version of each film for $100. If you use the following Amazon link, though, you can get a killer discount ($68 … [Read more...]
Mars Needs Moms Blu-ray 3D Review
I’ve got two young kids, so seeing a theatrical release in the theater strikes about as often as a good night’s sleep. I’d wanted to see Mars Needs Moms in the theater but (surprise, surprise) hadn’t been able to due to family obligations. Home Blu-ray Disc releases, particularly Blu-ray 3D ones, are my best conduit to the outside movie-watching world. Naturally, then, I was stoked when Mars Needs Moms hit my Blu-ray 3D shelf -- almost as stoked as when I saw the first 3D visuals jump off the screen and smack me upside … [Read more...]
Tangled Blu-ray 3D Review
Tangled ruled the theatrical roost for quite a while last year, continuing Disney’s run of successful non-Pixar animated films. In light of its box-office dominance, Tangled was sure to be one of Disney’s showcase Blu-ray 3D releases this spring, second only to TRON: Legacy, a Blu-ray 3D review for which we’ll publish soon. Considering Tangled’s high profile, I expected great things, and the film certainly delivered. What I didn’t expect was just how awesome the Tangled 3D experience would be. The plot of Tangled … [Read more...]
Ultimate Gs: Zac’s Flying Dream 3D Blu-ray Review
Image Entertainment has been one of the more prolific distributors of 3D Blu-ray movies since the format’s debut last year, so it’s not surprising that they’ve had some winners and losers. That’s just how the law of averages works. Their 3D Blu-rays have varied in scope, length and content, but they’ve all generally been home versions of IMAX films, as is the case with Ultimate Gs: Zac’s Flying Dream. This film is one of the earlier 3D IMAX movies -- so early that it features a 10-year-old Michael Cera -- which has a … [Read more...]
