Never doubt the power of cross-marketing popular franchises. Electronic Arts and Microsoft today announced a partnership with Mojang to merge the worlds of Mass Effect and Minecraft into something completely new and unique. The first-ever Mash-up pack add-on for Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition. Why is EA involved, you ask? Because the DLC will be none other than a Mass Effect Minecraft amalgam. In the Mass Effect Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition mash-up pack, the world from EA's hugely popular franchise will be fused into … [Read more...]
EA Madden NFL Lawsuit Jury Awards Programmer $11 Million
The jury in a lawsuit brought against Electronic Arts (EA) regarding its Madden NFL franchise ruled yesterday that the game's original programmer is owed royalties on the Madden NFL games published by EA. By ruling in the plaintiff's favor, the jury awarded Robin Antonick a multi-million-dollar judgment and set the stage for another phase of the Madden NFL lawsuit regarding all games in the franchise published after 1996. After three days of deliberations in the Madden NFL lawsuit, a jury in U.S. District Court in … [Read more...]
Best of E3 2013: Six Weeks Later Awards
E3 2013 provided some phenomenal sights, sounds and experiences thanks to the upcoming launch of the PS4 and Xbox One. Yet identifying the best games of E3 can’t really be done on the last day of the show or the following week. With all the big screens and bigger marketing campaigns, it’s too tempting to blindly follow the pretty blinking thing. That’s why, for the second year in a row, we’ve purposefully held our Best of E3 awards for six weeks – long enough to be immune to the multimedia blitz, and far enough away … [Read more...]
Fuse Review
Insomniac Games has expanded well beyond the Ratchet & Clank franchise during this console generation, beginning with the PS3’s Resistance: Fall of Man and continuing with their newest game, Fuse. Published by EA, Fuse marks Insomniac’s most public multiplatform escapade, shipping on Xbox 360 in addition to the developer’s traditional PlayStation home. But even with several consoles to call its own, Fuse is grounded in the basic hallmark of Insomniac’s games: surprisingly deep gunplay. As with many shooters today, the … [Read more...]
Need for Speed Rivals PS4 Demo Video Footage from E3
Forza Motorsport 5 and The Crew got a lot of attention at E3, but I couldn't resist the all-out arcade fun of Need for Speed Rivals. I've been a fan of the NFS series for years now, and Rivals looks to put the NFS series on steroids. For 15 minutes of behind-closed-doors time at E3, I got to play the Cops vs. Racers mode, and I did pretty well for the first two-thirds of the demo. By "pretty well," I mean I had the most points on the Racer team, avoiding the Cops with (surprising) skill and racking up points along … [Read more...]
Battlefield 4 “Angry Sea” Single-Player Demo Gameplay Video
Battlefield 4 needs no introduction - unless you're talking to gamers who are more enamored with single-player games than multiplayer ones. In that case, BF4 -- if not the entire Battlefield franchise -- may very well be foreign ground. Much like the Call of Duty series, the Battlefield games have a massive multiplayer following and attract millions of gamers for that reason alone. But contrary to popular opinion, there is a single-player narrative, and a surprisingly large one in the case of Battlefield 4, which we saw … [Read more...]
Five Funniest Things Overheard at E3 2013
No matter what outsiders may say, E3 should be taken seriously. Booths cost millions of dollars, events cost hundreds of thousands, and the stability of half-finished video games could make or break the careers of hundreds of family-wage developers. Maybe it’s that very pressure that causes such funny things to be said. It’s important to blow off some steam when dealing with a high-stakes scenario, and nothing can lighten the pressure like a quick one-liner. E3 2013 certainly had its fair share of zingers, and not … [Read more...]
Xbox One and PS4 Release Date Accidentally Revealed by EA?
Microsoft in its E3 media briefing said the Xbox One will release "this November" for $499, and Sony indicated in its E3 media briefing that the PlayStation 4 (PS4) will release "this holiday" for $399. Neither company announced a specific release date for its respective console, but did one of their valued partners accidentally release the Xbox One and PS4 release date? Could be. In an email today to members of the media regarding Need for Speed Rivals -- which looks awesome, by the way -- EA let slip a specific … [Read more...]
Dead Space 3 Review
The survival-horror genre gets such a bad rap these days that it’s tempting to overlook them for games with a frantic gunplay, co-op multiplayer elements, customizable weapons or ... wait, that’s actually what Dead Space 3 offers. Not often one to take franchise risks, EA made a massive gamble years ago on an untested studio with an unknown IP in a survival-horror genre that had been seemingly owned by Konami for eons. Now three games in, the Dead Space series has made EA look the part of a sage investor, with a … [Read more...]
EA CEO Resigns; Is No Longer “In The Game”
EA may be known for the phrase "it's in the game," but the game publisher's CEO is no longer living that motto. EA CEO John Riccitiello today turned in in letter of resignation, with his last day at the helm of Electronic Arts being March 30. Larry Probst, taking the temporary position of Executive Chairman, will take over on an interim basis and lead the search for a new CEO. No specific reason was provided publicly for Riccitiello's resignation, although the company's fourth-quarter revenues and earnings per share … [Read more...]
