Ghosts of the Abyss Blu-ray 3D Review
Apparently James Cameron’s first love is water. With The Abyss and Titanic already under his belt already, supposedly Avatar 2 is headed for an underwater environment as well. Fortunately, Cameron’s second love is investing the money he’s made from those (and other) movies right back into his aqueous hobby, as evidenced with Ghosts of the Abyss, which Disney recently released on Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray. A documentary of the Titanic itself, Ghosts of the Abyss marks the first time Cameron traveled back to the ill-fated … [Read more...]
Disney Pixar’s Brave: The Video Game Review
Like many movie-based games, Disney Pixar’s Brave video game borrows most of its situations from its big-screen brother, and as is the case with Disney tie-ins in particular, it’s tempting to think the game’s designed solely for kids. Well, I’m an adult, I saw the movie, and I enjoyed the game. In fact, I was curious if the fact that I had seen the Brave movie would help me at all or sway me one way or another as to its quality of gameplay. As it turns out, you don’t need to see the movie to understand the game, … [Read more...]
New Screenshots: Fort Wasteland from Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two
As longtime site readers know, I'm a huge Disney Parks fan, and I'm raising my kids to be the same. This weekend at PAX Prime, Disney unveiled a new area of Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two that's inspired directly by Frontierland when it opened with Disneyland in 1955. Called "Fort Wasteland," the new in-game area makes overt references to long-since-gone rides such as the Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland, as well as still-standing relics such as Fort Wilderness on the area formerly known as "Tom Sawyer … [Read more...]
Disney’s John Carter Blu-ray 3D Review
I didn’t get a chance to see John Carter in the theaters, but by box-office accounts, I wasn’t the only one. Panned for multiple reasons, Disney’s John Carter left theaters pretty quickly -- to the point that one of Disney’s highest executives resigned -- and then promptly released on Blu-ray 3D. Curious rubberneckers suddenly had the chance to watch John Carter for themselves, without fear of being seen by friends, to either look at the trainwreck or question what all the trashing was for. Having watched John Carter on … [Read more...]
Kinect Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure Review
Disney has embraced the Xbox 360 Kinect hardware like few other third parties, and the connection makes total sense. Since its founding, the company has been focused on the “experiences” it creates, and the Kinect hardware offers nothing if not an immersive gameplay experience. Disney’s first outing, Kinect Disneyland Adventures, did an outstanding job re-creating the in-Park experience, with only a few minor miscues along the way. Its most-recent game, Kinect Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure, focuses not on a Park … [Read more...]
Disney Epic Mickey 2 to Ship this Fall, Includes Oswald the Lucky Rabbit
Mickey Mouse will finally meet-up with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, as Disney Interactive today announced Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two will ship this fall featuring both characters. Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two is in development for the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii -- and a Wii U version is likely as well, given Disney's note that the game is in development for "new HD consoles including" the Xbox 360 and PS3. There's only going to be one other HD console out there this fall: the Wii U. You can pre-order the … [Read more...]
Toy Story 3 Blu-ray 3D Review
As a parent, I find Toy Story 3 to be an incredibly sad movie. Well scripted, meaningful and great, to be sure, but emotional and sad nonetheless. As a so-called graphics whore, I find Toy Story 3 to be one of 2011’s benchmark CG films, with animations and textures so refined they’d make granular sugar cry. Yet as a fan of the Blu-ray 3D format, I find Toy Story 3 to be a bit disappointing. The technological jump from the first to second film was remarkable, as I noted in my Toy Story 2 Blu-ray 3D review, and the impact … [Read more...]
Toy Story 2 Blu-ray 3D Review
Pixar is always one to make evolutionary leaps in technology, with subtle changes between in films that somehow make all the difference. Yet when it comes to the Blu-ray 3D presentations of Toy Story and Toy Story 2, the jump is more drastic than any Pixar has taken to date. The straight-up graphical improvements cannot be denied, but it’s the little nuances between the first and second outings of Buzz Lightyear and Co. -- things like depth of field and improved animations -- that help make the 3D effects so much more … [Read more...]
