It’s the first of the month, which means Microsoft has launched its Xbox One Games with Gold October 2014 program. As it has for the past three months, the company has offered just one new free game with for Xbox One Games with Gold October 2014 program.
Although there are technically two free Xbox One games in October for Xbox Live Gold members, only one of them is new. Called “Chariot,” the game is billed as a “couch co-op platformer” that sounds pretty fun. Xbox 360 owners get two new games this month through Games with Gold.
In Chariot, gamers drive atop their deceased king’s coffin, which for some reason has wheels, through 25 levels. Chariot has physics-based gameplay not unlike Max: The Curse of Brotherhood, which was a free Xbox One Games with Gold game several months back.
In addition to the physics-based play, Chariot lets players engage in some fast-paced driving sequences as well.
The other Xbox One Games with Gold October 2014 free game is Super Time Force. Super Time Force debuted on the Games with Gold program in September, making October its second straight month as a freebie. The other Games with Gold title from September, Crimson Dragon, is now history. Chariot replaced it.
Crimson Dragon was also part of the Games with Gold program for two months, as had been Guacamelee before it. October therefore marks the third month in a row Microsoft has offered only one new free game as part of its Games with Gold program.
Under normal circumstances it would be hard to argue with getting one free game every month as part of a $12/month Xbox Live Gold subscription. However, Microsoft’s biggest competition, Sony, has offered at least two new free games each month as part of its PlayStation Plus free games lineup. Microsoft’s offer is by comparison only 50% as strong as Sony’s.
What are your thoughts on the Xbox One Games with Gold October 2014 promotion? Are you as an Xbox One owner getting frustrated at receiving just one new free next-gen game per month, whereas PS4, PS3 and PS Vita owners get two? (For that matter, so do Xbox 360 owners.) Or are you taking it all in stride in enjoying the fact that the Xbox One Games with Gold October 2014 free game seems to be a good one, even if it is just “one”?
